We’ve been working with an elementary school in Santa Fe that was threatened with closure as it is old (75 yrs), small (150 capacity), under enrolled (120 or so), and a prime piece of real estate that could be turned into a rental property to help the District’s budget.

The Parent Teacher committee (PTC) decided a couple of years ago, to create the first Santa Fe magnet school, based on ecological studies and permaculture, as a way to revitatize the campus and keep it open.

Our team informally partnered up with Alvord in December of 2006, and together we’ve been working on a mutually benefitial vison-A school as the Heart of the Community, demonstrating social, economic, and ecological sustainability. With hands on, relevant learning, the curriculum will encourage kids to get inspired, stay in school, and help transform the planet. Keep the facility open after school and into the evening, and provide Lifelong learning for the community, lowering the facilty costs for everyone!

The School Board voted to give Alvord three years, starting in 09-10, to prove itself as a successful sustainable magnet. The 1st organizational meeting occured Jan 26, 2008. We’re off and running!     JOIN IN AND LEND YOUR SUPPORT!
